Are you interested in planting a rain garden on your school site? Then this workshop is for you! Greenacres will be holding two single day workshops June 15th and 22nd to train teachers grades 3-12 on a new Rain Garden Lesson Guide developed in 2009 as part of the Clermont Soil & Water Conservation District Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF) grant called “Partnering to Protect Water Resources: A Rain Garden Demonstration and Education Project." This Rain Garden Lesson Guide contains six project-based science and math lessons that take you and your students through the process of designing, installing, maintaining, and monitoring a Rain Garden on or near your school campus. The Lessons are divided into three grade bands (3-5, 6-8, and 9-12). All Lessons have been correlated with Ohio Academic Standards and use an inquiry-based approach to learning. A 2010 OEEF Mini-grant awarded to Greenacres Foundation is allowing us to offer two single day workshops for teachers at no cost. Garden Education:
A grant from the Hamilton Storm Water District is allowing the Hamilton County Soil & water Conservation District (SWCD) to offer low cost soil fertility testing through Michigan State University. This offer is limited to Hamilton County residents and only two boxes can be purchased per household. The test results will provide you with a soil amendment recipe to ensure you get the most out of your plant investment.
Soil testing kits and instructions can be obtained from your SWCD office for only $10.00 if you pick up the kit at their offices or for $12.00 if you would like them to mail the kit to your home. You can stop by the office and pick up your kit at 29 Triangle Park Drive, Sharonville, Ohio 45246, any weekday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or you can call the office at 772-7645 to order the kit. Out of county residents and those wishing to purchase more than two test kits may do so for $12.00 each, picked up, or $14.00 each, mailed.
The good news is that fall is the best time to test your soil! This is a small investment when you consider the cost of plants and that fertilizer costs have increased 300% in the past year. You will also be doing your part in reducing the use of unnecessary chemicals. The best way to ensure gardening success is to provide good soil quality for your plants. Test Your Soil Fertility Now!!
